Harvesting Honey in Out of the Box

Pupils from the Out of the Box after school club enjoyed a real treat in one of their sessions when they were visited by Rabbi Hulbert who brought in fresh honeycomb from his own bee hive. The children initially listened to an introductory talk about how bees pollinate flowers as they search for nectar and pollen. After that they were able to look at a honeycomb themselves.

During the visit, Rabbi Hulbert showed the children how to uncap the honeycomb so the honey could flow and then they all took turns to wind the handle on the extractor to harvest the honey – this was very hard work!  At the end of the session, the children had the chance to taste the delicious honey!
