Lions on the Loose! For St Clare Hospice
The Year 6 class has been working together to paint their lion sculpture, inspired by the Brazilian artist, painter, serigrapher, and sculptor Romero Britto. His work combines elements of Cubism, Pop Art, and graffiti art, using vibrant colours and bold patterns to express hope, dreams, and happiness.
Taking inspiration from these bold patterns and designs, Year 6 developed an overall theme reflecting animals found in the surrounding countryside. In keeping with Britto’s style, the lion was segmented using masking tape, and each pupil considered the designs they would create within their allocated section.
Initially, the pupils explored and developed ideas in their sketchbooks. They then refined these ideas, transferring their designs onto their individual sections of the lion while working collaboratively to ensure the overall piece was cohesive and complementary.
The pupils applied the skills they had learnt, carefully mixing and blending paint to create a wide range of colour tones. Gradually, their ideas began to take shape. Mrs Bull and Miss Manning-Swallow were extremely impressed by the pupils’ commitment and teamwork, as well as the way they supported one another throughout the process. Well done to you all, we cannot wait to see the finished piece.
