Year 1K - Save the World Assembly
Year 1 Kerrigan's assembly explored the theme "Why Our Planet Matters" and showed us how we can help our world by recycling, caring for nature and being kind to one another.
Daniel began by introducing himself as Planet Earth:
"Hello everyone, I am Planet Earth. I am about 4.5 billion years old, which makes me much older than your grandparents, your teachers and even the oldest dinosaur! I am the only planet we know of that supports life. I have huge oceans, tall mountains, icy poles and hot deserts. Millions of plants, animals and people call me home."
He reminded us that when astronauts look at Earth from space, it appears as a beautiful blue marble.
We learned that our planet is not only home to people living in cities, the countryside and snowy regions, but also to an incredible variety of wildlife. From tiny ants and colourful parrots to giant elephants and enormous whales, Earth is filled with amazing creatures. Plants and trees are equally important, providing the oxygen we breathe, while even the smallest bees play a vital role in helping flowers grow.
George then explained, "Sometimes rubbish ends up where it doesn't belong, and that can cause problems for animals, plants and people." As the children reflected on this important message, they sang "What a Wonderful World", highlighting the importance of protecting our planet and keeping it safe for everyone.
The pupils then considered what we can do with litter instead of simply throwing it away. Paper, such as newspapers, cardboard and drawings, can be recycled and transformed into new products. Plastic bottles can be made into new bottles, bags, clothing and even playground equipment. Often, items can be reused rather than discarded.
The children encouraged us all to become Earth Heroes by following the three Rs: Reduce by wasting less, Reuse by finding new purposes for old items, and Recycle by turning used materials into something new. They also reminded us to switch off lights when they are not needed, save water by turning off taps while brushing our teeth, and choose to walk, scoot or cycle whenever possible to help keep our air clean. Planting flowers supports bees and butterflies, while putting rubbish in bins helps keep our environment cleaner and safer. Together, these small actions can make a big difference.
The assembly also emphasised the importance of caring for one another. Even a simple smile can brighten someone's day. The pupils shared examples of kindness they had experienced and spoke warmly about what they appreciated in their classmates. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed their performance of "A Million Dreams", which lifted the spirits of all those in the hall.
The assembly concluded to enthusiastic applause. Mrs Doherty was extremely impressed by how confidently the pupils remembered their lines, sang with enthusiasm and delivered such an important message with clarity and humour. As Daniel reminded us:
"When people look after the world, I feel happy and healthy. When they forget to care for me, I feel a little tired. And trust me, a tired planet is not a very good look!"
This charming assembly ended with a prayer, reminding us that together we can make a difference and thanking everyone for attending.
