Mr Wilson was delighted to welcome the pupils into the hall. He began by asking whether they were aware of the major sporting events currently taking place and was pleased to see, by a show of hands, that many pupils knew about the Football World Cup.
He explained that each national team is made up of the very best players their country has to offer and invited pupils to share who their favourite player was.
Mr Wilson then asked whether pupils were aware of the upcoming Wimbledon tennis tournament and was again pleased that so many were familiar with the event.
He encouraged pupils to think about how these outstanding athletes had not always been successful. Like the pupils, there were things they could not do yet. He asked questions such as: Can you tie your shoelaces? Can you ride a bike without stabilisers? Can you recall your seven times table? For those who had not yet mastered these skills, the answer was, “Not yet.”
Mr Wilson explained that the only way to develop these skills, and many others in life, is through commitment, practice, perseverance and focus.
Before watching a video from England football captain Harry Kane, Mr Wilson shared examples of well-known sports stars who achieved success through hard work. David Beckham practised for three hours every evening. Serena Williams trained relentlessly alongside her sister under the guidance of her father. Lionel Messi was known for being the first to arrive at training and the last to leave, remaining focused on his dream.
In the video, Harry Kane explained that he was released from Arsenal’s youth programme at a young age. When his father broke the news, he reassured him, saying, “We’ll just go again, work harder and see where it takes us.” Those words stayed with Harry throughout his life and helped him through difficult moments when things did not go as planned.
Mr Wilson was also delighted to invite Avery from Reception to share his Learn to Swim certificate with the school. We applauded his perseverance and achievement.
Adriana from Year 2 proudly shared her certificates and medals from a recent gymnastics competition, where she achieved first place in Beam and Floor and second place in Vault. She was delighted with her success and explained that she had only been attending her gymnastics club for one year.
