Year 6 Trip to Epping Forest Museum

Mrs Moon, Mrs Bull and Mrs Wall took Year 6 on a trip to the Epping Forest Museum this week to explore artefacts that have been found in the local area (including a mammoth tooth and tusk) from the Stone Age through to Second World War.

They learned about the legend of the Abbey Tabby (a tale about the special cat that protects the town); how housing had changed during the Tudor times and what those homes looked like; the legend of the tribes near Ivy Chimneys and the Roman pottery and weapons found there and explored local toys and homeware from the Victorian ages.

Barnaby, Olivia and River were able to try on the WWII gas mask and warden outfits in the Home Front section of the museum.

In the afternoon, pupils looked at the marketing of the Central Line years ago (that included Epping to Ongar). They learned about Walter Spradbery and looked at the art work that he created for the Central Line. Year 6 then created their own designs which they transferred onto tiles for printing with acrylic paint. Year 6 were able to take their prototypes home and their finished artwork is in display in their room. Year 6 also set up an art gallery for the Mayor of Epping to view and she was amazed with their creativity. It was a really interesting day and both staff and pupils learned so much!
