Year 2 Explore Habitat at The Hive
Year 2 enjoyed a wonderful visit to The Hive in Epping Forest. The workshop was led by Abby, who explained what a habitat is and asked pupils to share examples they knew, which included ponds, jungles, deserts and the Antarctic. Pupils then learned about the vital elements needed for survival: food, water, shelter, air and a suitable temperature.
The focus then moved to Epping Forest, where pupils discussed the living things found there and where they live. Abby grouped these into vertebrates and invertebrates and explored whether they were carnivores or herbivores. Pupils also considered which habitats would best support these animals’ survival.
Pupils then went into the forest to explore the forest floor and discover where to find minibeasts. They carefully identified suitable habitats, collected their findings responsibly and enjoyed sharing them before returning the creatures safely to their homes.
In the afternoon, pupils took part in an animal quiz before being able to handle a diverse variety of animals. They learned where in the world we could find them and what habitats they lived in. The pupils were very enthusiastic and enjoyed solving the quiz. Mrs Hogarth and Mrs Zylstra were delighted by how carefully the pupils handled the animals - a Giant African Land Snail, Giant Cockroach, Stick Insect, Fire Salamander and Corn Snake.
Year 2 had a fantastic trip and were excellent ambassadors for Coopersale Hall.
