What is a Patron Saint Assembly - March 2026

The pupils entered the hall to the sound of the Welsh national anthem. Once the music had finished, Mrs Barr welcomed them and asked how the anthem had made them feel. She was pleased with their thoughtful responses and agreed that a national anthem is often uplifting, creating a sense of positivity and connecting people to the identity of their nation.

Mrs Barr explained that patron saints are regarded as special protectors or guardians. They can originate from many different walks of life and are considered an important part of a nation’s identity. She discussed with the pupils what they already knew about the patron saints of the different nations within the United Kingdom.

St David is the patron saint of Wales, and his day is celebrated on 1st March. People often pin the national flower, the daffodil, or the national vegetable, the leek, to their clothing. They also enjoy traditional foods such as Welsh cakes and cawl, a hearty soup made with potatoes, swede, carrots and meat.

St Patrick is the patron saint of Ireland, and St Patrick’s Day is celebrated on 17th March. It began as a religious festival and has since become an international celebration of Irish culture, marked by parades, dancing, special foods and many people wearing green.

St George is the patron saint of England, and his day is celebrated on 23rd April. Legend says that he slew a dragon, and his popularity grew during the times of the Crusades and the Hundred Years’ War. During the Tudor period, his feast day was formally established in 1415. Celebrations can include festival events, Morris dancing and traditional foods such as fish and chips or roast beef.

St Andrew is the patron saint of Scotland, and his day is celebrated on 30th November. Many people wear traditional dress, including the kilt, enjoy a meal of haggis and dance to the sound of bagpipes. A long-standing tradition is for communities, particularly in Edinburgh, to hold large celebrations in honour of the day.

It is wonderful to learn about the different customs of the nations within the United Kingdom and to understand the food, music and dress that help to express their unique identities. The pupils thoroughly enjoyed gaining an insight into these traditions.
