Year 1 Stanley - Toy Assembly

Year 1 Stanley hosted their class assembly for their families and peers. They had been learning about what their grandparents’ childhoods were like and discovered that while some things were similar to their own experiences, others were quite different. They shared with everyone what they had learnt.

They explained that in the 1960s many schools did not have a school uniform, whereas most schools today do. In the past, schools often had chalkboards, whereas now we are able to use interactive boards that connect to the internet.

The pupils also explored the games their grandparents enjoyed playing and discovered that many of these are still popular today. We enjoyed listening to them sing a skipping game song.

It was wonderful to hear about their grandparents’ favourite toys, as well as the books they enjoyed reading. The pupils also sang a song about toys in a museum coming alive at night.

Many of the pupils shared with the audience the foods their grandparents had spent time making with them. Izzy was delighted to have made pasta with her grandma, explaining that “when her grandma was little, this was a real treat.” The children also told us that in 1974 McDonald's opened its first restaurants in the UK, and today they can be found in most major towns.

At the end of the assembly, the pupils thanked everyone for listening and expressed their gratitude to their families for helping to enrich their understanding of this topic. Families and pupils then enjoyed a private viewing of a slideshow featuring photographs that had been sent in of their grandparents when they were young and at school themselves.

Mrs Stanley and Mrs  Simikel were delighted with how well the pupils sang their songs with actions and how confidently they delivered their lines. Mr Wilson was also impressed and commented on how opportunities like this help to build the pupils’ confidence.

Well done to everyone, it was a wonderful assembly and a lovely way to begin the day.
