Year 4 The Great Plague Workshop
Year 11 pupils, who study The Great Plague as part of their GCSE unit on Public Health Through Time, recently delivered a workshop to Year 4, who will be studying the topic after the Spring Break.
Year 11 introduced the timeline of events that led to the outbreak of the plague. Scarlet, dressed as a famous Plague Doctor, described the methods used to ‘treat’ the sick. The pupils also led a demonstration of pomander making, as people at the time believed that ‘nice’-smelling air could eradicate disease. Pomanders were made from muslin cloth and filled with mint, parsley, lavender and thyme – herbs commonly used during the period.
Year 4 pupils then created their own 3D rats for display. Olive in Year 4 said, “This has been a really fun way to learn about the Great Plague.” Jasper added, “I can’t wait to take my pomander home and show my family what I have made.”
Year 11 commented that Year 4 were an absolute pleasure to work with and very curious about the past.
