Mrs Hogath's Whole School Assembly - 16th March 2026
Mrs Hogarth was delighted to welcome pupils to the hall for our whole-school assembly. She began by asking what the children had recently been celebrating and was pleased with their thoughtful responses. She then showed a picture of a variety of snacks and chocolates and asked pupils what they would choose, and whether they would share them with their families. This led to a discussion about how difficult it can be to stop at just a few treats or to avoid them altogether.
Mrs Hogarth explained that at this time of year Muslims observe Ramadan, a period when they fast from sunrise to sunset, with no food or water passing their lips during the day. Pupils were asked how they thought this might feel, and again their responses were very considerate.
Muslims wake early before sunrise to eat Suhoor and then do not eat again until Iftar after sunset. Fasting is an act of faith, helping people focus on their religion, reflection and helping others. While everyone is encouraged to take part, allowances are made for those who are very young or who need food for medical reasons.
Ramadan is a very important time in the Islamic calendar, observed by Muslims around the world. In the UK in 2026, it is expected to run from Monday 17 February to Thursday 19 March. The end of Ramadan is celebrated with Eid ul-Fitr, which may fall on Thursday 19 or Friday 20 March depending on the moon. Families celebrate with special meals, new clothes, decorated homes and beautiful Mehndi patterns painted on their hands.
Mrs Hogarth was pleased to invite Zaha to the front to share how she will be celebrating Eid ul-Fitr and how she is feeling. She ended the assembly by encouraging everyone to be thoughtful and considerate towards others.
