Year 5 Tackle Maths

The traditional method of teaching multiplication can often leave pupils feeling overwhelmed, especially when working with three-digit by two-digit numbers that include decimals. To overcome this challenge, teachers are adopting a hands-on, interactive approach to make learning both effective and enjoyable.
This term, Year 5 have been strengthening their understanding of partitioning numbers up to 1,000,000. They have used a variety of pictorial representations, such as place value charts, part-whole models, and base-ten visuals, to break large numbers into their component parts. Through these activities, pupils have developed a deeper understanding of the place value system, confidently identifying the value of each digit and exploring different ways of representing numbers. This strong foundation is helping to build their overall number sense and preparing them for more complex calculations.
