Year 9 Trip to Epping Forest District Museum
Mrs Moon and Mrs Wall took Year 9 to the Epping Forest District Museum to see an exhibition curated from artefacts, letters, photos and stories from The Home Front in WWII.
The class arrived for a general look around the whole museum, then Year 9 presented back to their classmates about what they had seen. Monty was impressed by the weaponry found in Waltham Abbey used in the Battle of Hastings and Ava was impressed with the original Tudor fireplace that was still intact.
Year 9 went into the classroom space to handle some original objects (sources) that had been found in the local area. There were items of clothing, ration books, pieces of shrapnel, army uniform, household items and letters for pupils to look at, the focus was on what connected these items to people and the war.
After lunch, pupils went back into their groups to select an area of WWII that they were going to create their own exhibition in groups. Pupils chose: 'The impact of war on children and schools' and 'Rationing of food and material and threats to The Home Front' as their themes. The rest of the class then asked each student curator a question about their exhibits and everyone discussed the bias in museums. Pupils had a great time learning in an active way, outside of the classroom.
