Music from around the World

The new term has seen musicians at Coopersale Hall thinking about music from around the world. Year 3 have been looking at ways to structure music. To learn about the “Question and Answer” structure they learnt a Polish folksong. To learn about the “Call and Response” structure they have been listening to and performing music from the African continent. The Year 3s got to use our set of djembes and other instruments from Africa learning how to produce the different sounds and how to perform some folksongs.

Year 4 have been learning about music from Latin America, they’ve looked at countries and languages used in Latin America and learned how the rhythms and instruments used in the music has influenced the music and instruments we have in the classroom.  They’ve been writing their own syncopated rhythms and trying them out on instruments.

Year 8’s music topic this term has been Indian Raga, the pupils have been writing their own ragas and talas and have been using our set of mini tabla drums and the sitar sounds on the keyboard to make their pieces as authentic as they can.

In GCSE music, pupils have been focusing on the “Rhythms of the World” area of study, learning about music from India, Africa, South America and the Middle East. They have been able to look at and use a number of our drums from other countries and have been using what they have learned to inspire their compositions.
