Learning in Infants

Mornings have a strong focus on teaching English and Mathematics. We follow the ‘Letters and Sounds’ literacy programme in Key Stage 1, spending time on phonics, weekly spellings, grammar and writing skills. In addition children have individual and group reading sessions to help develop their ability to read for meaning. We use various Maths schemes as our core, which we supplement with weekly times tables challenges, mental maths and problem solving.

The curriculum allows the pupils to develop their thinking skills and abilities across a broad range of subjects and topics including Science, History, Geography, French, ICT, Art, Drama, Music, RE, Personal and Social Education, and Physical Education.

Each term parents are provided with a curriculum overview outlining what the focus for the term will be, including the topics being covered and homework routines.

Academic Subjects at Infants

Pupils are taught in smaller class sizes, creating a good staff-pupil ratio that is beneficial to a more personalised learning programme. The curriculum at this level is built around the framework of the National Curriculum guidelines, which we use as a starting point. We take every opportunity to challenge our pupils to think for themselves and to participate readily in the classroom. We encourage them to discuss their learning and to understand how to make further progress.

Specialist teachers continue to take subjects such as French, PE/Games, ICT, Dance, Science and Music so that the class teachers can concentrate on the core subjects such as English, Mathematics and Humanities.
