Learning in Juniors
The curriculum at this level is built around the framework of the National Curriculum guidelines, which we see as the bare minimum. We take every opportunity to exceed the national average while continuing to emphasise the development of literacy and numeracy skills. Specialist teachers continue throughout the Juniors and there is a good staff-pupil ratio that is beneficial to our more personalised learning programme.
Our SENDCo and her team ensures that we stretch and challenge appropriately with our Gifted and Talented programme. Similarly, those pupils who need additional support are given the option of one-to-one tuition, or specialist dyslexia tuition.
All pupils in Year 6 are expected to move automatically into our Seniors. They take the 11+ examination with external candidates, which provides them with a valuable experience and helps us to place them appropriately when setting. Junior pupils also have the opportunity to apply for senior scholarships, which are awarded for academic ability, music, sport or creative and performing arts.
Academic Subjects at Juniors
Our Juniors continue the rich and varied curriculum that was started in the Infants. Pupils are taught in smaller class sizes, creating a good staff-pupil ratio beneficial to a more personalised learning programme.
We take every opportunity to challenge our pupils to think for themselves and to participate readily in the classroom. We encourage them to discuss their learning and to understand how to make further progress.
Specialist teachers continue to take subjects such as French, PE/Games, ICT, Dance, Science and Music so that the class teachers can concentrate on the core subjects such as English, Mathematics and Humanities.
