Welcome Back Assembly – Summer Term 2025

Mr. Wilson welcomed everyone back to school at our first assembly of the term, where he spoke about one of our core British values: tolerance. Before exploring this theme, he expressed his hope that everyone had enjoyed their break. Several children shared their favourite moments from the holidays, setting a positive and engaging tone.

Mr. Wilson then introduced a piece of music—an improvisation featuring piano and guitar—that he had found particularly inspiring over the Easter break. When he asked some of the children what they thought of the piece, the responses were varied:

  • Flo (6B): “I really didn’t enjoy that.”
  • Felix (6B): “It was OK, not brilliant.”
  • Banner (6B): “If you like it, then that’s fine, isn’t it?”

These pupils joined Mr. Wilson at the front of the hall, where he used their honest reactions to spark a discussion on tolerance and intolerance.

To further the discussion, Mr. Wilson asked the children how they felt about pineapple on pizza—once again, opinions were mixed!

He then invited the Year 6 panel to join him in a traditional Brazilian game. The rules were simple: stand on one leg with one hand across your chest while a cloth hangs from your waist; the aim is to capture your opponent’s cloth first. Only Banner was brave enough to give it a go!

Through these interactive examples, Mr. Wilson encouraged everyone to reflect on the thoughts and feelings of the Year 6 pupils. Were the responses showing tolerance? Intolerance? Or perhaps a willingness to embrace new experiences and understand others’ preferences?

The assembly was lively and thought-provoking. The children were open and honest in sharing their views—whether about Mr. Wilson’s musical taste, his love of Hawaiian pizza, or his favourite game. Mr. Wilson also reflected on how it might feel when others reject your preferences, and asked: what if he insisted everyone play his game every day? Would that require tolerance?
