Eco-Council Assembly: The Importance of Bees
Our recent whole-school assembly, led by the Eco-Council, focused on the vital role bees play in our ecosystem. Held in recognition of World Bee Day on May 20th, the assembly aimed to raise awareness about the importance of protecting bees.
We watched an informative video highlighting the threats bees face, including harmful pesticides, spreading viruses, climate change, and loss of natural habitats due to urban development. These factors are making it harder for bees to survive, find shelter, and pollinate plants.
Bees are essential to our food supply—one-third of global food production relies on them. They also help maintain biodiversity and reduce pollution.
To support bees, we can:
- Plant bee-friendly flowers like daisies and heather
- Leave parts of our gardens wild with long grass for shelter
- Build bee hotels or leave shallow water dishes with pebbles for drinking
- Use bee bricks as nesting spots
- Avoid pesticides
- Buy honey and other products from local beekeepers
Everyone reflected on the importance of how small actions can make a big difference in protecting these incredible insects.
