All the pupils gathered in the hall to begin the week by celebrating International Literacy Day. Miss Gilbert was delighted to introduce this special occasion and asked everyone to reflect on an important question: Should everyone be able to read and write?
We learned that around the world, 2 billion people struggle to read a single sentence, and two-thirds of people who are illiterate are women and girls.
Miss Gilbert encouraged everyone to think about what literacy means and how this powerful skill impacts our lives. Pupils shared thoughtful ideas such as:
- “Reading how much medicine you need to take.”
- “Learning how to look after your pet.”
- “Making sure you get all your groceries on a list so you don’t forget anything.”
Together, we recognised how essential literacy is for everyday life and for exploring the choices we want to make.
On this, the 58th International Literacy Day, we reflected on the many ways we can celebrate this remarkable skill.
Mr Wilson then took to the stage and invited the pupils to congratulate those who had earned merit certificates for their hard work and perseverance. Everyone was delighted to applaud their peers—a wonderful way to begin the week.
