Mrs. Carter was delighted to share with the whole school the recent visit of 10 Year 5 pupils to Felsted School, where they took part in a Science Challenge Day. Olivia, Valentina, and Delilah excitedly told the school about the day’s mystery—solving the case of the stolen and eaten Headteacher’s chocolate cake!
To uncover the culprit, pupils conducted a series of scientific experiments.
First, they analyzed food samples left behind as evidence, testing for starch, protein, and fats. They also examined an unknown sample linked to two suspects. Their findings suggested that the culprit had likely eaten custard cream biscuits before committing the crime.
After a short break (and a nice snack), the pupils moved on to testing soil samples found on the suspects and in the crime scene. By performing pH tests and flame tests, they were able to narrow down who had been in the room when the cake was stolen.
Following a wonderful lunch, pupils received fingerprint and fiber evidence, which they examined using microscopes. This allowed them to clearly identify who had touched the cake plate and had been present at the scene. After reviewing all the evidence and comparing it with suspect statements, they confidently concluded that Mr. Rogers, the Science teacher, was the guilty party!
Proof that you can never trust a Science teacher around delicious chocolate cake!
Well done to Olivia, Valentina, Delilah, Carter, Edward, Teddy, Felicity, Marnie, Reeva, and Jessica for an exciting and successful Science Challenge Day!
Mrs. Carter, assisted by Science Prefect Banner in Year 6, also introduced the school to this year’s Science Week Challenge, themed “Change and Adapt.”
The children eagerly discussed the meaning of these terms in a scientific context and explored how they could apply them. They were informed that they had a week to submit their entries, which would be displayed for the whole school to enjoy after Science Week. Additionally, Mrs. Carter announced that she would be selecting five entries to submit to an external competition.
She wished everyone good luck and looked forward to seeing a variety of creative and scientific submissions!
