Year 1 Build Hedgehog Homes

As part of their topic work on ‘Homes’, Year 1 have been learning about animal habitats. 1Bu and 1Bi went on a learning walk to explore animal habitats in the school grounds.

The children decided to make hedgehog houses in order to raise awareness about the decline in hedgehog numbers in Britain.

The children brought in a shoe box which they painted in autumnal colours, then used leaves and twigs to insulate and camouflage their hedgehog homes. The children wrote facts about hedgehogs and found out about ways to encourage these delightful mammals into their gardens.

They are planning to put their hedgehog homes in their gardens, so the hedgehogs have a safe place to hibernate this winter.

It was great fun learning about these prickly animals and the children are very proud of their homes.
