Pupil Spotlight – Jessica – Year 3

Jessica in 3C had stopped participating in gymnastics during covid, but after a conversation with Mr Barham and all his enthusiasm, Jessica started back up again! He has reignited Jessica’s passion for sports this year and she’s gone from strength to strength and loving every bit of it!

The levels in her club (Redbridge Lions) start from 8 and work up to level 1, they are the same challenges across all age groups – then pupils work on bronze, silver and gold challenges. Jessica only started with them as a new joiner 5-6 months ago but achieved all the criteria in 2 gradings last week and has moved up two levels in one week! After a 3 year break from gymnastics and a new joiner to this club she’s working at level 2 already – thanks to Mr Barham!

She’s just started football and will train with them through the summer to join the Loughton team in September. She has also had many 1:1 tennis lessons, racking up a total of 6 hours minimum out of school sports, with 4 hours just on gymnastics!

When we ask Jessica what she enjoyed the most, she replied:

“I actually like gymnastics the same as football.  What I really do like is that gymnastics teaches you to express yourself through the movements that we are shown.  I feel happy that the squad that I am learning with are really nice and we are very supportive of one another.

I am a defender in the football team and I enjoy this position.  We have to work as a team, communicate with each other and help the goal keeper with defending our goal. Whatever the score at the end I am reminded by my mother that it is important that I have had fun and I agree and I definitely do.”

Mr Barham was very touched by what Jessica had said, and awarded her 20 house points for all her dedication to sports. We look forward to hearing about the tournaments and events Jessica will participate with in the future.
