Year 1 learn about the British Isles

During this term Year One has been discovering about the United Kingdom as part of their topic work.  The children have been very creative and engaged in the lessons.

The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland is the official title of the state. Wales, Scotland, Northern Ireland and England are often called the Home Nations.

The children have discovered what flower is the symbol of each home nation: England’s symbol is the rose, Scotland’s is the thistle, Wales’ is the daffodil and Northern Ireland is the Shamrock.  In Art, the children have created these flowers using a range of mediums.

We have also been learning about traditional foods that come from each of these countries. The children made scones and enjoyed them with cream and jam to represent.

They enjoyed welsh cakes from Wales and shortbread from Scotland.
