New Year Resolution Assembly – January 2025

Mr. Wilson warmly welcomed the school into the hall for our first assembly of 2025. “During this festive season, did you keep your promise to help at home?” he asked. He was pleased to see many hands raised in response.

As we stood on the threshold of a New Year, Mr. Wilson posed two thoughtful questions to the pupils: “What does the New Year mean?” and “Have you made any resolutions?”

While everyone reflected, Mr. Wilson read The Snowdrop by Hans Christian Andersen, a story with a moral message to ponder.

The children listened attentively as he recounted the tale of a snowdrop bulb. Safely buried underground, the bulb longed to push through the soil and explore the world outside. Despite the harsh season of North winds, rain, and snow, the little bulb kept pushing until it finally sprouted and emerged as a flower.

The winter sun welcomed the snowdrop warmly but warned that it could not linger long—it was still too weak. The North Wind mocked the fragile flower, confident it would not survive the bitter night. Though afraid, the snowdrop closed its petals and summoned the courage to face whatever lay ahead.

By morning, the sunshine found the snowdrop blooming brightly, stronger than it had imagined. A mother and child walking through the woods noticed the delicate flower. The child wanted to pick it, but the mother explained that the snowdrop was a sign of spring’s arrival and a symbol of perseverance in the face of hardship.

After finishing the story, Mr. Wilson asked, “Why do you think the snowdrop was so determined to grow and bloom?”

Hands shot up across the hall, and pupils offered thoughtful answers:

  • “It wanted to play.”
  • “It wanted to see the world and try something different.”
  • “It was tired of being stuck and wanted to become something more.”

Next, Mr. Wilson asked, “What qualities did the snowdrop show?”
The children responded eagerly:

  • “It was determined.”
  • “Even though it was scared, it showed bravery.”
  • “It felt proud and happy to have bloomed.”

Mr. Wilson was delighted by how much the children had learned from the story. He connected its message to our school’s core values:

  • A Friendship
  • Be Respectful
  • Courage
  • Determination
  • Excellence

Like the snowdrop, he explained, we grow stronger when we persevere and stay true to our resolutions. He then asked the pupils if they had made any resolutions and started working toward them.

He was impressed by their answers. Ben, from Year 4, shared that he had resolved to do more cooking and had already helped his father prepare dinner for the family. Frey, also in Year 4, resolved to encourage more kindness and respect among friends and family.

With these inspiring reflections, the assembly concluded, leaving everyone motivated to nurture their goals and grow stronger in the New Year.
